Since the financial crisis in 2008 the Greek economy has been in deep recession. Tens of thousands of small businesses have closed and many more continue to close. Shops where generations of merchants run successful businesses have been disappearing rapidly and together with them, the family run shop, the backbone for the Greek economy, a landmark in Greek family life, is sadly coming to an end. Some of the shops are being replaced by cafes and fast food outlets, but usually most of them remain empty. All the photos were taken in Athens.
